Best Practices in Supporting Individuals with Autism in the Pool Environment.

1. Gain an understanding of the aspects of autism spectrum disorder and how its strengths are connected to water.

2. Understand the additional safety risks that a diagnosis of autism brings to the pool environment, including the role of wandering.

3. Practical knowledge of how to build rapport with swimmers during your sessions.

4. Understand and implement a variety of new teaching strategies and recognize which one

   to use for each specific child.

5. Adapt previously learned teaching methods to incorporate each child’s ability level and

   learning style.

6. Understand the importance of communicating effectively with parents/family members

   and understand that communication is ‘not just talking’.

7. Understand the different sensory challenges swimmers may present and acknowledge

   and support swimmers’ sensory needs in the pool environment.

8. Implement water therapy games that impact gross motor skills, joint and muscle

   pressure, water therapy, and social skills.

9. Understand the importance of making our communities inclusive and accessible.

10. Gain awareness of the functions of challenging behaviour and strategies to identify and respond to these functions.

11. Understand and implement inclusive language and understand accommodations vs modifications.

12. Understand swimming and aquatic programs' motor, cognitive, social and emotional benefits.
